At the September 19, 2024 BPAC meeting, OakDOT Safe Oakland Streets Coordinator (SOS) Mica Amichai will present information from the 2023 annual Safe Oakland Streets update.

- 2023 was another deadly year on Oakland’s Streets, with a total of 33 crash fatalities.
- 6% of Oakland’s streets account for 60% of severe and fatal crashes.
- 95% of high-injury streets is in Medium to High Priority Equity Neighborhoods.
- Most dangerous driving behaviors:
- Unsafe turning (especially left-turns)
- Unsafe speed
- Impaired driving
- Failure to yield
- Severe and fatal crashes disproportionately impact Black Oaklanders and seniors.
Looking Ahead: Opportunities
- Continuing to focus resources on the high injury network and in high priority communities
- Institutionalize the updated 2024 high injury network.
- Evaluate the International Blvd quick-build project and apply the successes to future projects.
- Continue to strengthen OakDOT/OFD partnership.
- Establish speed safety camera pilot program.
- Assessing high impact policy opportunities.
